Chapter 1: The Revelation of the Fixed Gear

In the tumultuous annals of urban cycling, where the streets were overrun with a cacophony of clanking chains and whirring gears, there emerged a revelation that would forever alter the course of two-wheeled history. Amidst the chaos and confusion, a group of intrepid cyclists sought solace in simplicity, shunning the complexities of modern bike technology in favour of a purer, more primal form of transportation – the Fixed Gear bicycle.

With its single gear ratio, lack of freewheel mechanism, and stripped-down aesthetic, the Fixed Gear bicycle stood as a beacon of minimalist design and unwavering purpose amidst the sea of mechanical clutter. Eschewing the trappings of conventional cycling wisdom, the disciples of the fixed gear embraced a new paradigm of urban mobility, one defined by simplicity, elegance, and an unbreakable bond between rider and machine.

Chapter 2: The Genesis of the Fixie

And so, from the ashes of chaos arose the Fixie – a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its creators. Born not in the gleaming laboratories of high-tech manufacturers but rather in the cluttered workshops and makeshift garages of devoted artisans, the Fixie was a labour of love, pieced together from the discarded remnants of forgotten bikes and lovingly restored to its former glory.

The chosen ones, the disciples of the fixed gear, scoured the alleys and scrapyards in search of vintage frames and components, treating each discovery as a sacred relic to be revered and cherished. With hands calloused from countless hours of labour, they meticulously assembled their steeds, imbuing them with a sense of purpose and identity that transcended their humble origins.

Each Fixie bore the scars of its past life – scratches, dents, and faded paint serving as testament to the trials and tribulations of its journey. But beneath the surface, imperfections lay a spirit of resilience and determination, a silent promise to conquer the urban jungle and traverse its concrete arteries with grace and precision.

Chapter 3: The Commandments of the Fixed Gear

Guided by a set of commandments passed down through the ages, the disciples of the fixed gear embraced a code of conduct that governed their every pedal stroke and dictated their every move:

Thou shalt ride fixed, for in the simplicity of motion lies the true essence of cycling. Embrace the purity of the ride and revel in the symbiotic relationship between man and machine.

Thou shalt eschew brakes, for the fixed gear rider relies on the power of their legs and the finesse of their footwork to control the speed of their steed. Trust in thyself and let instinct be thy guide.

Thou shalt embrace the skid, for it is a testament to thy mastery over the machine and thy intimate connection with the streets. Fear not the sound of rubber meeting asphalt, for it is the symphony of urban exploration.

Thou shalt worship at the altar of minimalism, for excess gears and accessories are but distractions from the purity of the ride. Let simplicity be thy guiding light, and let thy steed be thy canvas.

Thou shalt pedal with purpose, for every rotation of the crank is a prayer to the cycling gods, a declaration of devotion to the wheel and the road. Let each pedal stroke be a symphony of motion, a testament to thy commitment to the journey.

Chapter 4: The Rites of Passage

To join the ranks of the fixed gear faithful, one must endure the rites of passage – a series of trials and tribulations designed to test the mettle of the aspiring disciple:

The initiation ride is where the novice must navigate the chaotic streets with no brakes and no fear, trusting in their own abilities and the solidarity of their fellow riders. Let instinct be your guide, and let the rhythm of the city be your companion.

The alleycat race is a test of speed, skill, and street smarts, where only the boldest and most resourceful riders emerge victorious, their names etched into the annals of urban cycling lore. Let thy instincts guide thee, and let thy steed be thy chariot to glory.

The midnight ride, a pilgrimage under the cloak of darkness, where the city belongs to the nocturnal cyclists and the streets take on an otherworldly allure, beckoning the intrepid rider to explore its hidden depths and secret pathways. Let the moon be thy guide and let the rhythm of the night be thy companion.

Chapter 5: The Sacraments of the Street

In the sacraments of the street, the fixed gear rider finds communion with their fellow cyclists, forging bonds of camaraderie and kinship that transcend the boundaries of time and space:

The group ride is a symphony of synchronized pedalling and effortless camaraderie, where the pack moves as one, a living organism navigating the urban landscape with grace and precision. Let the rhythm of the ride be thy guide, and let the bond of brotherhood be thy strength.

The bike messenger hustle, a dance with danger and deadlines, where speed is salvation and the rider’s agility and resourcefulness are put to the test in the unforgiving crucible of the city streets. Let the rhythm of the city be thy guide and let the pulse of the pavement be thy heartbeat.

The coffee shop congregation, where tales of urban exploration are shared over cups of artisanal brew, and the bonds of friendship forged on the road are celebrated with laughter and camaraderie. Let the warmth of the coffee be thy comfort, and let the laughter of thy companions be thy solace.

Chapter 6: The Trials of the Fixed Gear

But the path of the fixed gear rider is not without its trials as they navigate the treacherous terrain of the urban landscape.

The dreaded headwind, a relentless adversary that tests the resolve and stamina of even the most seasoned riders, threatening to sap their strength and slow their progress to a crawl. Let the wind be thy ally and let thy determination be thy strength.

The steep hill climb, where every pedal stroke is a battle against gravity itself, and the summit seems like an insurmountable peak looming ominously on the horizon, daring the rider to conquer it with sheer willpower and determination. Let the hill be thy challenge, and let thy resolve be thy guide.

The pothole peril, a treacherous obstacle that lurks unseen beneath the surface of the road, ready to swallow the unsuspecting rider whole and send them hurtling headlong into the unforgiving embrace of the asphalt. Let the road be thy ally, and let thy reflexes be thy shield.

Chapter 7: The Redemption of the Fixed Gear

Yet in the face of adversity, the fixed gear rider finds redemption, emerging stronger and more resilient than ever before.

The zen of the spin, where the rhythmic cadence of the pedals and the hypnotic whirr of the chain transcend the chaos of the city, enveloping the rider in a cocoon of serenity and mindfulness as they pedal their way through the urban landscape. Let the rhythm of the ride be your guide, and let your breath be your anchor.

The flow state is where mind and machine become one, and the rider’s movements flow effortlessly and intuitively as they navigate the twists and turns of the city streets with grace and precision, their senses heightened and their reflexes honed to a razor’s edge. Let the rhythm of the road be your guide, and let your instincts be your compass.

The sense of community, where strangers become comrades, united by their shared passion for cycling and their love of the fixed gear, bound together by the bonds of friendship and camaraderie forged on the road and in the coffee shops and bike co-ops that serve as the gathering places of the cycling community. Let the rhythm of the ride be thy guide, and let the bond of brotherhood be thy strength.
Chapter 8: The Legacy of the Fixie

Chapter 8: The Legacy of the Fixie

And so, the legacy of the fixie lives on, passed down from one generation of cyclists to the next, a timeless testament to the enduring spirit of human ingenuity and perseverance. For in the heart of every fixed gear rider beats the rhythm of the city, a constant reminder of the most precious substance – the simple joy of the ride.

In conclusion, let us pedal forth with purpose, embracing the purity of motion and the communion with the streets. For in the world of fixed gear cycling, simplicity is sacred, and the journey is its own reward. Amen.

I loved this! Your writing is biblical and poetic, and conveys your love of riding. I am firmly in the “gears” crowd and haven’t ridden a fixie since the 1970s and the seduction of the first garish ten-speed, but as we all mix in the group ride of life, I think we can all celebrate the beauty and freedom of cycling. Great post.

Thanks Steve. Everyone should just put aside our differences and then realise we don’t really have any that aren’t artificially created.
