Last week was my second visit to Shetland for work reasons, creating a new cycling education system, routes and events. It is always fun up in Shetland if you can accept the weather conditions in which you will find yourself riding through. I did learn from the first visit and took a bike with gears and the ability to coast; I am now an official sellout.

Cycling in Shetland

Cycling in Shetland is not easy, but it is rewarding; every corner or summit leads to views that blow you away. You will find headwinds that mean you have to pedal down hills, and you will ride short, sharp climbs that will make time move so slowly that 2 minutes becomes hours.

The thing is, though, all of this is type 2 fun.

As I was travelling light, all these photos were taken by my phone, and none of them really do justice to Shetland. It is truly a magical place, and when you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, the silence is therapeutic. There is nothing quite like watching the sun go down while the wind hits you and you listen to the waves hitting the cliffs.

You should just go. Words also don’t do Shetland justice.
